Why this matters to you and your family - Family enjoying clean Puratap filtered water

Why this matters to you and your family

There's been a quiet shift in what's turning up in Australian water supplies. Chemicals once called "emerging contaminants" are now appearing more often — and their long-term effects are still not fully understood.

Here's what experts are watching most closely:

You can't:

That means there's no way to know if they're in your water — or if the filter you've bought can actually reduce them. That's where science steps in. Independent testing is the only way to know for sure — and that's exactly what we did with Puratap Ultraguard.

It's why your filter needs to handle today's water — not yesterday's.

Puratap UltraGuard water filters - NEW filters perfected over eight years in collaboration with UNISA and CSIRO

Planning ahead — not catching up

At Puratap, we've always believed in planning ahead — solving tomorrow's problems before they reach your tap. That's what drove the Ultraguard project: seeing new threats emerge and making sure your system could handle them.

That's why we partnered with CSIRO and UniSA in an eight-year, $945,000 research collaboration focused on safer, more effective household water filtration. The result is the Puratap Ultraguard Filter — world-class protection included automatically at your next service, at no extra cost.

Ultraguard Performance Results

The Puratap Ultraguard filter has been tested by an independent ISO/IEC 17025–accredited laboratory (ILAC MRA) for the chemicals appearing in the news articles above.

Microplastics — Exceeded the Benchmark by 110%

Microplastics are now detected in food, bottled water and even air samples. Although research into health effects is still developing, the World Health Organization has called for urgent global study.

Result: Independent testing showed Ultraguard captured particles down to 0.5 microns, delivering 110% higher removal efficiency than the NSF benchmark for microplastic reduction. That level of performance reflects the filter's more uniform carbon structure, which holds smaller particles more consistently for the full service life.

Change the filter between 11–12 months to maintain full performance.

Forever Chemicals (PFAS & PFOS) — Below Detection Limits

PFAS compounds—often called "forever chemicals"—do not break down easily in the environment and can accumulate over time. They have been found in water supplies across Australia, prompting stricter national guidelines and warnings from the U.S. EPA and NHMRC.

Result: Ultraguard reduced PFAS and PFOS levels to below the laboratory's 5 parts-per-trillion detection limit—effectively undetectable under test conditions. The test confirms Ultraguard provides real-world defence against one of today's most persistent contaminants.

Annual replacement ensures those results remain consistent.

Lead — Protected from filter to tap

Lead in Australian mains water is uncommon; in-home plumbing can be the hidden source. Older brass fittings and fixtures can leach trace amounts of lead into drinking water — now being addressed by new lead-free plumbing requirements.

Result: lead protection at every stage.
The Ultraguard Filter reduced lead to below 0.005 mg/L under controlled lab conditions (pH 6.5; ~0.055 mg/L challenge; ~2.1 L/min; cumulative 2,500 L).
Performance varies with water chemistry and particulate content. Replace filters every 11–12 months to maintain performance.

Clean delivery.
Puratap mixer taps and separate faucets use a polymer-lined filtered-water path, so purified water does not contact brass on its way to the glass.

Note: This is not an NSF/ANSI 53 certification; NSF protocols include additional worst-case conditions

Trihalomethanes (THMs)

By-products of chlorine disinfection; the World Health Organization lists some as possible carcinogens.

Result: Our previous filters already removed THMs and 45+ VOCs — Ultraguard maintains that strength while improving consistency and longevity. Like every filter, Ultraguard must be changed between 11–12 months to maintain full performance. Protection fades as the filter fills — that's why timely service matters.

Independently tested by an ISO/IEC 17025–accredited laboratory (ILAC MRA).
